Price
The Fitbit Versa 4 was originally priced at $200, but at the time of writing (July 18), the smartwatch is available at a discounted price of $160, and you can buy it directly from the Google Store. It comes in Black, Waterfall Blue, Pink Sand, and Beet Juice with Graphite, Platinum, and Copper Rose Aluminium colorways.
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, on the other hand, launched at $280, but you can buy it at a discounted price of $150 at a retail or Samsung official store. It also has an LTE version, which costs an additional $50. It comes in Sapphire, Pink Gold, Silver, and Graphite colorways.
Design
The Galaxy Watch 5 boasts a round design with a shiny, sleek bezel, catering to those who want a circular watch on their wrist. It doesn’t offer a rotating bezel, which was introduced with the Galaxy Watch 4, but it does have touch-screen support and two buttons on the right to explore its UI and other functionalities. It also comes with an in-built speaker on the right and a microphone on the left for a seamless Bluetooth calling experience.
Meanwhile, the Versa 4 has a squarish design with shiny, rounded corners and a silicone band for comfort and feel. The watch also comes with touch-screen support and provides a single button on the left with a speaker and microphone for Bluetooth calling.
In terms of their casing, both offer an aluminium casing, but the Versa 4 features a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for added durability and scratch resistance, but the Galaxy Watch 5 takes a step further with Sapphire Crystal Glass, which is 60% harder and 1.6 times stronger than Corning Gorilla Glass.
The Galaxy Watch 5 sports a 1.2” AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 396 x 396 pixels, while the Versa 4 sports a 1.58” AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 336 x 336 pixels. Both have a bright, colourful display and offer always-on display support, so the screen will show something instead of a black or blank screen.
Both have dust and a water resistance rating of IP68, so you can use these smartwatches for swimming or dusting roads without damaging the watch screen.
Health Monitoring
If we talk about health monitoring, the Galaxy Watch 5 features heart rate, SpO2 (blood oxygen), and blood pressure monitoring. It also has a skin temperature sensor and a body composition tracker (including weight, body fat percentage, and muscle mass). The device also features an ECG monitor but requires a Samsung phone to use this functionality.
In contrast, the Versa 4 features heart rate, SpO2, blood glucose (in app only), menstrual health, and stress tracking. Plus, it also has a skin temperature sensor and fitness features like active zone minutes, cardio fitness score, and some basic features like steps, calories, and a distance tracker.
In terms of sleep tracking, both devices can track sleep in multiple stages, including light, deep, and REM stages. The Galaxy Watch 5 features a sleep coach that analyses your sleep from multiple nights and creates a 5-week programme to guide you to improve your sleep pattern and habits. Meanwhile, the Versa 4 offers a sleep score based on the quality of the previous night’s sleep.
The Galaxy Watch 5 can track up to 90 sports with the ability to auto-detect popular activities like running and swimming. On the other hand, the Versa 4 can only track 40 sports activities with the ability to detect popular sports and record the stats into the app.
Smartwatch Features
Both smartwatches give you Bluetooth calling support via the inbuilt speaker and a microphone for a seamless talking experience. You can receive and make calls directly from your wrist, but you will need your phone nearby and connected via Bluetooth. But with the Galaxy Watch 5 LTE version, you can call anyone directly from your wrist without your phone nearby.
These smartwatches also come with a Google voice assistant, Google Maps, and NFC support to pay contactlessly directly from the smartwatch.
To personalise your smartwatch, you can download watch faces from their dedicated store to enhance your smartwatch experience.
Battery Life
The Galaxy Watch 5 claims a battery life of up to 40 hours on a single charge, and you can get around 1-2 days of battery life under moderate use (with notifications, fitness tracking, and occasional GPS), but with heavy usage (with continuous GPS and music streaming), the battery drops down to 20–24 hours.
In contrast, the Versa 4 can last for up to 6 days even with moderate use, including tracking activities and using most apps. It also supports quick charging and can give you a battery life of one day in just 12 minutes of charging.
Remember, these battery stats can vary depending on the features you use, and battery-consuming features like an always-on display, continuous GPS tracking, and Bluetooth calling can reduce the battery further.
